In recent weeks, a new type of scam has started making the rounds. Scammers are pretending to be representatives of mobile phone operators and calling customers with news that if customers wish to have an over overview of their tariff, they need to install the operator’s app. It is not unusual for operators to make such calls, but in this case, the scammers instal the operator’s app at the same time you do. They then ask you to give them the authentication code sent to your mobile phone. In this way, the scammer gains access to your app, from where they can take control of your mobile phone account. The first thing they do is have an electronic SIM card, i.e., an e-SIM, issued.
The issuance of an e-SIM results in your SIM card being blocked. The scammer then uses your number to make calls, send text messages and generate new passwords to your e-mail accounts, social network accounts, etc.
Recommendation:
- Be on your guard.
- Never give third parties any codes you receive via text message.
- If you feel something is suspicious, end the call immediately and contact your mobile phone operator.
